Cosmetic Facial Surgery – Facial Makeovers
Cosmetic jaw surgery may be carried out by Maxillofacial Surgeons in conjunction with other cosmetic facial procedures. If many procedures are carried out all at the same time this is termed a Facial Makeover. Facial Makeover include many of the following procedures…….. Joint management with colleagues who have special training and expertise in certain procedures is an NCAFOS policy - in line with our goal of providing Clinical Excellence across a broad range of surgical procedures. Please see additional literature for further descriptions of these procedures available at the NCAFOS. Patient Confidence and Expectations Facial Makeovers can involve major surgery lasting 8 hours or more. Patients require appropriate preoperative counselling and realistic expectations may be encouraged by computer planning technology. From a psychological perspective, family support is ideal for patients entertaining such surgery. Lack of such support can lead to emotional problems between family members. On occasion a formal psychological assessment may be required prior to surgery to investigate adverse psychological disorders which may be a contraindication to surgery. Such patients may have a devastating view about their perceived appearance which cannot be demonstrated on screen with computer technology. As a general rule, major cosmetic problems are the easiest to rectify. Minor changes in aesthetics are more difficult to secure. It is important that the patient can relate to the surgeon and explain precisely how they wish the facial aesthetics to be changed. Computer planning is helpful in this respect.
